In most curious news this week, 100-million year old sea sediment bacteria has been resuscitated!
When scientists from Japan drilled down to raise cores of sediment to the surface, the team were happy to find bacterial cells preserved but were then astonished to find that when given food the bacteria came back to life!
Given that some 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by marine sediment there is a potential treasure trove of ancient bacteria to be uncovered.
