Archaeologists in Egypt have unearthed a sealed door where it is expected mummies may lay behind. In a year of pandemic and political unrest this new discovery seems unsettling to say the least!
Just ahead of Halloween this year in Saqqara, Egypt, over 2,600 years since they were buried, archaeologists discovered more than 59 ancient coffins in a large necropolis located just South of the Egyptian capital of Cairo. One coffin contained an immaculate mummy of an ancient priest!
According to Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the ornate sarcophagi have lain undisturbed since being entombed near the Step Pyramid of Djoser.
The footage released from the discovery showed colourful sarcophagi decorated with hieroglyphics. Included with the other artefacts found were 28 statues.
Amongst the more sinister discoveries was a sealed door which may lead to the discovery of more mummies. Or perhaps it’s a doorway to another dimension after the surprises of 2020!
The discoveries will go on display at the Grand Egyptian Museum in due course.
