This is our 25th anniversary year in the corporate treasury arena and much has changed in this time but our Adam Smith Awards remain the perfect embodiment of best practice and innovation in the industry. The Adam Smith Awards, now in their 16th year, continue to be a key highlight in the corporate treasury calendar, and we are delighted to continue this important programme of recognition. This year generated a record-breaking 320 nominations – truly outstanding. The role of treasury as a strategic partner, constantly challenged to deliver better and more innovative solutions to support corporate growth in a particularly challenging business environment, shines brighter than ever.
Like this year’s Overall Winner of our Treasury Today’s Top Treasury Team category, Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) which completed its acquisition of Celgene Corporation (CELG) in November 2019. Since then, BMS Treasury has been on a transformational journey to build a best in class organisation. Overall, there has been a paramount shift in processes and management of risk at BMS Treasury and it has cemented its role as the true trusted partner to the business.
Elsewhere, Ryanair was our Overall Winner, Best Cash Pooling Solution where it created a best practice cash and liquidity management structure which enables the airline to meet its vision as a leader in sustainable aviation in Europe, which is further evidenced by the company’s partnership with its bank to deposit funds in their new Sustainable Deposit Solution.
Other big-name winners include GE Healthcare Technologies Inc., Amazon, Toyota Financial Services, Microsoft and Henkel. Newer corporate names also caught our attention, such as Acciona S.A. who is awarded Overall Winner, Best Funding Solution. Elsewhere, Nirvana Travel & Tourism is awarded Overall Winner in our Best in Class Treasury Solution in the Middle East and Africa Airtel Plc in our Best Risk Management Solution category.
Roche scooped our Judges’ Choice. This is awarded to submissions worthy of particular attention and that demonstrate something extraordinary and unique in their implementation. Roche has developed an in-house solution which makes data available for multiple stakeholders to increase transparency, trust and process efficiency in cross-border payments and is predicted to keep the banking institutions on their toes. Other notable 2023 winners include Ingka Group/IKEA for a most impressive treasury transformation project, Palo Alto Networks, awarded Overall Winner in the Best Investing Solution category and Highly Commended Winner in the Best Risk Management Solution category.
Our individual award categories were also hotly contested. Our 2023 Rising Star is Franca Aeby, Senior Cash Manager at Roche and our Corporate Treasurer of the Year is Peter Rathgeb, Group Treasurer at Siemens. Peter is a seasoned mountaineer and uses the same risk management skills he deploys when assessing a climb to manage risk in his role as Group Treasurer of this German multinational conglomerate.
Following our live winners’ announcement on 3rd May, the Adam Smith Awards season has now begun. It includes a prestigious Adam Smith Awards Celebration Dinner in London at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, to take place on the evening of Monday 26th June from 6pm to 10pm. During the evening winners and their partners will be presented with their bespoke crystal awards. We will also be sharing all their success stories throughout our case study series, launching in August.
The Adam Smith Awards is globally recognised as the industry benchmark for best practice and exceptional solutions in corporate treasury, and this year is no exception. We look forward to celebrating our winners’ achievements and to bringing our formidable community together once again.
