At the age of 24 Dominique Cachelin, Treasury Manager at Samsung has already obtained a wealth of treasury experience and expertise. This has seen him capture the attention and gain the trust and respect of senior management, quickly rising up the ranks. He is certainly is a rising star in the industry.

Dominique Cachelin, Treasury Manager at Samsung, is responsible for the cash and liquidity management, FX hedging and investment strategy for the EMEA region. Prior to joining Samsung he worked for Teva’s European Treasury in Zurich, Switzerland. He holds a BSc in Accounting and Finance from the University of Southampton and is close to completing both his AMCT and CIMA qualifications.

Dominique Cachelin received his first taste of treasury with Teva Pharmaceuticals where he worked as a summer intern for three years whilst he was at university studying accounting and finance. “The department, like too many treasury departments, was under-resourced,” he recalls. “This proved to be an excellent opportunity for me to join a team who were both keen and supportive for me to learn and take on many different duties.”

During the internship, Dominique’s responsibilities ranged from managing the physical intercompany loan documentation to supporting the implementation of their new SunGard TMS. In his last summer at Teva, Dominique assisted in a review of their asset-backed commercial paper securitisation programme.

After graduating from university, Dominique joined Samsung as an EMEA Treasury Analyst. His first role was to assist with the back office FX and cash management operations. In addition to this, he was also responsible for the day-to-day management of Samsung’s Global Intercompany Netting programme.

Always one to take the initiative, Dominique took it upon himself to learn how to write code for Excel VBA and created a number of macros to aid with some of the more manual tasks. “Overall I managed to save approximately 50-man hours per month through the use of Excel macros and improved data collection,” he says.

This work, tied with Dominique’s ability to learn new processes quickly and identify areas where efficiency could be improved, captured the attention of the senior management and he was promoted to front office. Dominique quickly had to learn about FX hedging and the company’s cash management operations across EMEA. Today he is responsible for executing a high value/volume of FX transactions per week and managing the EMEA cash pool. Dominique has also been spearheading changes to Samsung’s FX hedging strategy that has resulted in a sizeable saving in bank commission.

Another key area of focus has been ensuring that Samsung avoids negative interest rates on its cash investments. Whilst admitting this has been a “difficult task”, Dominique has demonstrated first-class relationship management skills by working with Samsung’s banking partners to come up with innovative ways to do this.

All of this work saw Dominique promoted to Treasury Manager in March this year. He has also recently passed his Certificate in Treasury, achieving a distinction in all five exams, and is currently studying for a Diploma in Treasury as part of AMCT qualification and the CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting.
