European Head of Sales for Global Payments Solutions
HSBC serves customers worldwide from offices in 60 countries and territories. With more than US$3trn in assets at year-end 2024, HSBC is Europe’s largest bank by market capitalisation and the world’s largest Global Transaction Bank by revenue.
Cara Savas, HSBC’s European Head of Sales for Global Payments Solutions, is a long-time champion of diversity.
“As a people business, reflecting our clients’ profiles in our own teams is a non-negotiable for me,” she tells Treasury Today. “To have diverse decision-making in our teams, we need diverse perspectives. Whether it’s people from different functions within the organisation or those with different lived experiences, it is important to appreciate and embrace different perspectives.”
Cara’s commitment to promoting inclusion within and outside her organisation earned her the accolade as Highly Commended Leading Light – EMEA. The newly-created “Leading Light” category celebrates those that have made a real difference in motivating and empowering others to have a voice and be heard.
Cara stresses the importance of supporting diversity at all career levels. She particularly reflects upon the careers of women, who often have to balance family duties, such as caring for children or elderly parents. “If we don’t support our team members during those life moments, it’s difficult to retain them and allow them to continue to advance their career. It’s about awareness and respecting what people bring to the workplace, which is different at different times,” she says.
She often provides mentorship and support to talented individuals among her corporate clients, as well as her team at HSBC. She advocates providing opportunities outside a person’s comfort zone to stretch them and allow them to bring unique insights, which can help drive better outcomes for the bank and its clients.
The evolution of inclusion
Social mobility is one particular area of diversity close to Cara’s heart. “Large financial institutions consider diversity when it comes to graduate intake – it is also important to consider “first in family” university graduates, who may benefit from additional support that they did not receive early on” she says.
To provide support for students from different socio-economic backgrounds, her team volunteers in local schools as students prepare for their A-Level exams to help them with interview technique and work experience. Cara, for example, worked with a refugee student who was improving her English proficiency and completing her A-Levels before applying for a university spot and work experience. “Her background is a world away from a typical UK student, so maybe she’ll bring a different perspective to the workplace than a colleague with a more traditional backstory” says Cara.
Neurodiversity is another area that Cara is passionate about. She tells a personal story of resilience, as her son was non-verbal for the first few years of his life. She took a career break to explore therapies that would prepare him for school, as well as have him assessed on the autism spectrum.
“We need to understand that not everyone presents in the same way during an interview,” she says. Cara points to a team member who needed help in prioritising tasks and hitting deadlines. “By helping the manager to understand and support her needs, we were able to tap into her brilliance,” she adds.
Best practice
Modest by nature, Cara points to a few basic initiatives that she believes has moved the needle on inclusion, such as diligently ensuring diverse candidate slates and ensuring interview panels also reflect diversity.
“Some candidates may be hesitant to put themselves forward for roles where they may not tick every box – however you can still learn something about yourself and receive concrete guidance on where you need to upskill.”
Reflecting upon her 25-year career, Cara’s aim is to act as a mentor every day, formally and informally, to support the innovative thinking needed to make the world a more equitable place.
