Kyriba is a global leader in liquidity performance that empowers CFOs, Treasurers and IT leaders to connect, protect, forecast and optimize their liquidity. As a secure and scalable SaaS solution, Kyriba brings intelligence and financial automation that enables companies and banks of all sizes to improve their financial performance and increase operational efficiency.

This year’s overall winner for Leading Light EMEA is Melissa Di Donato, Chair and CEO at Kyriba, a provider of cloud-based treasury and finance solutions.

Making an impact

As CEO of Kyriba, Melissa has achieved impressive business growth and attracted significant investments. In just her first year, she propelled the company to four record-breaking quarters, and attracted Kyriba’s largest investor Bridgepoint to reinvest, making the company the largest investment among Bridgepoint’s portfolio. What’s more, Melissa’s track record of success also led to Kyriba’s new minority shareholder, General Atlantic, to invest in the company’s growth.

Lighting the way

Melissa was raised with her mother’s powerful words: “don’t be a lady, be a legend,” and in the face of life’s toughest setbacks, she emerged even more resilient and with a mission to inspire others to go beyond what they believe they are capable of. She uses her position and influence to speak openly about the challenges women still face in the workplace, as well as to take the actions that business executives, policymakers and future leaders of all genders must take to achieve gender parity.

Speaking recently to SheCanCode, an organisation fostering collaboration to tackle the gender gap, Melissa said, “Women too often shy away from individual recognition and are taught to downplay their successes. Let’s celebrate more of our hard-earned wins.”

According to Christina Barakett, Managing Director, Alvarez & Marsal Europe LLP, “it can be daunting for many” women because the finance and accounting industries often lack female role models at the senior and C-suite levels of management.

“That’s why it is so inspiring to see an accomplished, confident and outspoken CEO like Melissa at the helm of Kyriba, a consequential fintech [company] serving the global treasury and finance community,” she said. “She demonstrates that you don’t have to dim your light or fit a certain prototype to be successful as a female leader. What’s more, I’ve seen first-hand the commitment and emphasis she places on fostering a diverse and inclusive team at all levels.”

“It’s always been very important for me to lead by example – for my employees, customers, partners, and the technology, treasury, finance and business sectors broadly. This award is an important reminder for me, and all women, not to shy away from recognition. Being a female CEO has its challenging moments, so I celebrate every hard-earned win.”

Driving change

She previously served as a non-executive director for the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology and continues to serve on the SME Digital Adoption Taskforce of the Department for Business and Trade. In this role, Melissa is shaping national strategy that will support the UK as it strives to compete on a global scale, while also advancing the cause of women in technology on the policy agenda.

Melissa was the inaugural chair of the 30% Club’s Technology Working Group, which aims to increase the representation of women in boardrooms and C-suites worldwide. She is also the founder of Inner Wings, a charity dedicated to cultivating confidence in children in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This year, Inner Wings graduated its 25,000th student, which aims to ensure that future technology leaders reflect the diversity of the real world.

Melissa also serves on the board of J.P. Morgan Europe, where she was appointed a board ESG champion and is a member of the supervisory board of Porsche AG. In addition to these roles, she has authored three children’s books, which focus on building self-confidence from an early age.

Practicing what she preaches

At Kyriba, Melissa has enacted pay equity initiatives to ensure fair compensation across all demographics. And the number of women in its global employee base has increased to 34% of the workforce, while the number of women in leadership positions increased to 28% by the fourth quarter of 2024.

Last year, she directed the launch of a new female leadership development programme, RISE, and appointed Kyriba’s first dedicated Talent and Inclusion Programme Manager. The Pride at Kyriba ERG was also launched and is designed to foster an open and inclusive environment where all LGBTQIA+ employees and allies can come together for community-building, development and mentorship.

According to Adam Drew, Chief Financial Officer, at Kyriba, “As the CFO of a company that serves other CFOs, treasurers and finance teams, it is critical that we ‘practice what we preach’, from regulatory compliance and effective use of liquidity to fostering a culture of integrity. For some financial leaders, a CEO can be a barrier; at Kyriba, Melissa is a changemaker.”
