RBL Bank is a private sector bank with an extensive presence across India. The bank offers specialised services under five business verticals, including: corporate banking, commercial banking, branch banking and retail liabilities, retail assets, and treasury and financial markets operations. It currently serves over 15.48bn customers through a network of 561 branches.

Akanksha Sindwani, Deputy Vice President of RBL Bank in India, is this year’s Highly Commended Winner for Leading Light Asia Pacific.

Following a philosophy of learning, consistent movement and prioritising outcomes not outputs, has seen Akanksha grow from “a little girl confused standing in a crowd struggling to find her place to a well-established lady”, after 13 years.

While working as a deputy manager at HDFC Bank in 2016, Akanksha found an office where staff were encouraged to work late to demonstrate to senior managers that they were overloaded with work. Work at the department also tended to “pile up”, she adds.

Akanksha led by example and managed her day-to-day work to ensure it was completed within regular business hours, helping to end the late-night culture within three months of her joining the bank. This leadership strategy was acknowledged and commended by the senior leadership at HDFC at the time.

She attributes her initiative in starting a task and guiding a team accordingly as core to the quality of her leadership.

Key to ensuring a congenial work environment and basic amenities in the work premises is to optimise for the most effective use of funds, she claims.

“Inspiration is one of the keys,” says Akanksha. “I always inspire my team and keep them updated with the latest in the market.”

The bulk of Akanksha’s professional career has focused on augmenting organisational performance with proficiency in trade finance sales and operations in all trade products with a core focus on bank guarantees, import bills, export finance, and confirmation discounting in coordination with banks.

After studying electronics and communication engineering, at the Gurgaon Institute of Technology and Management, Maharishi Dayanand University, Akanksha transitioned into banking. She began her financial journey as a front desk officer at Axis Bank’s Rajouri Branch. It was here that she learned to “survive” the industry, she says. From her experience in retail banking at Axis, Akanksha transitioned to trade finance at Yes Bank, where she became a team leader for bank guarantees in North and East India.

Within the banking industry, she has experience in increasing revenue and efficiency, with expertise in trade finance sales. She has over 12 years of experience in trade operations, cash management services and working capital. She has driven sales initiatives to achieve business goals, resulting in over 200% revenue growth. The sales promotional activities she has implemented played a part in various banks, where she worked, brand building and market development efforts.

In Akanksha’s current role as Deputy Vice President at RBL Bank in India, she manages the Haryana region as a product head for trade finance. This includes liaising with the operational and central teams to meet and serve clients’ trade-related queries and requirements.

“It’s a remarkable achievement and this would not have been possible without the blessings of God and also the incredible support, guidance and inspiration I’ve received from my parents, my husband and above all my seniors I have worked with. Their mentorship and belief in me have played a crucial role in my growth. Thank you for the opportunities, the trust and the encouragement that helped shape my journey. After receiving this award, I feel a mix of pride, validation and perhaps even a renewed sense of responsibility. Looking forward to continuing to grow and contribute as this will always be a shared milestone.”

She is also responsible for managing the relationship managers at respective branches and businesses to achieve foreign currency throughput targets for trade finance products, as well as focusing on digital activation and product penetration.

The role also involves managing customer-centric operations and ensuring customer satisfaction by meeting delivery and service quality standards.

In addition to the roles above, Akanksha served as Chief Manager at IDFC Bank and as an officer at the Commercial Bank of Qatar.

Throughout her career, Akanksha has also established relationships with executives of new and existing corporates in the Delhi NCR region to understand their requirements and provide solutions tailored to their needs. She has also implemented a sales strategy to exceed key performance indicators, including fee income, FX income, and flows, as well as trade book size, to ensure cross-sell opportunities.

Akanksha has worked on pitching structured trade products (non-fund and fund-based, such as Letters of Credit, bank guarantees, and receivable finance), as well as inward and outward remittances (import and non-import).

Saket Mittal who has previously worked with Akanksha, describes her as “quite thorough” on bank guarantees and has a “keen eye” in catching onerous clauses to ensure quality processing.

“She understands dynamics within various stakeholders, well, and she is able to manage things well before escalations,” he adds.

Kanika Aggarwal, Product Sales Manager at RBL Bank echoes the praise. “I have known Akanksha for quite a few years and have always admired her professional approach to maximise revenue and solving all client concerns proactively,” she says.

A significant portion of Akanksha’s time is also devoted to philanthropic activities, volunteerism and social justice efforts that have a lasting and transformative impact on the lives of others, she adds.

“I feel I am an example of never stop and keep moving,” says Akanksha. “I took all the challenges coming my way and made them opportunities and worked hard to prove myself in whatever role I was assigned for.”

That “little girl” Akanksha claims she was, is now a senior leader who is “looked up to” by junior staff.

“I can say that any person can achieve what they want. Want is a must to survive in the corporate world; without it, we have no identity,” she adds.
