Treasury in New York: 2020 and beyond

Published: Dec 2020

In the New York City area, since 1983, the Treasury Management Association of New York (TMANY) has brought the local treasury community together to network and learn. 2020 hit New York City particularly hard, causing tragic losses and enormous disruption to individuals and companies alike. At the end of 2020, Treasury Today caught up with TMANY to learn about their work and to hear about the year that was, as well as their upcoming plans.

TMANY is an association of treasury professionals providing education, thought leadership and networking to the treasury community. Their focus has historically been on professionals working in the region, which includes the states of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. However, with the widespread and growing use of virtual meetings and webinars, they are now seeing participation in our events from individuals working in other parts of the US as well as from other countries. This year their annual New York Cash Exchange (NYCE) conference took place in 2020 in virtual format and attracted participants from all over the US and beyond.

Impact of 2020

This year they explained that TMANY members expressed challenges with communication and zoom fatigue in addition to lack of in-person networking. Although 2020 has been challenging due to the pandemic, one of the positive outcomes for this group has been the broadening of their event topics to include self-care and career development/coaching themes, which are especially needed at this time. A humanising approach to business community which we have noticed across the board in 2020.

The group are planning more virtual events as well as the New York Cash Exchange (NYCE) 2021 scheduled for 15th, 16th and 17th June. In addition, on 3rd February they are hosting a Treasury Innovation Northeast Symposium.

Treasury Today has noticed the strain that a lack of regular contact and engagement has put on our treasury community this year and so for our community in the greater NYC area who are interested in being involved with a local group you can do so by contacting TMANY here.
