1970 was the year that the Dale, a new three wheeled car, was announced to the world. Created by Elizabeth Carmichael, a transgender female entrepreneur, the car’s launch was preceded by a series of revelations about Carmichael’s past, financial actions and the technology behind the invention itself.
The story is the focus of a new HBO documentary, The Lady and The Dale, available to view on HBO Max, and features interviews with members of Carmichael’s family. Featuring fraud, gender politics, media bias and corruption, it is a tawdry and tense tale that is incongruous with the innocuous automobile at its centre!
