Press release: BDO comments on HMRC’s investigation into Electronic Sales Suppression tools

Published: Dec 2022

9th December 2022 – Commenting on the news that HMRC has made a number of arrests in connection with the use of Electronic Sales Suppression (ESS) software to hide till sales, Dawn Register, BDO’s Head of Tax Dispute Resolution said: “This is clearly a very significant operation by HMRC. Ninety businesses across England, Scotland and Wales have already received a visit and there could be thousands more who are now in HMRC’s sights.

“The tax authority has opened a new time-limited disclosure facility for those that have used these ESS systems. We would encourage all affected businesses to seek expert tax advice on this and other disclosure routes, in particular the contractual disclosure facility or ‘Code 9’ route which offers immunity from prosecution.”
