Planning your post-lockdown holiday – have you considered space?

Published: Mar 2021

Many of us are dreaming of being able to take a holiday, anywhere outside of your own home seems like a treat right now – but have you considered space? The world’s first space hotel is set to open in 2027.

A space station with earth in the background

In just six years the first ever space hotel is expected to open. Guests will be able to see earth as they float around in low orbit. The hotel, Voyager Station, will have capacity for 400 guests and will include all mod cons; a cinema, a spa, a gym, basketball court, oh and you’ll be able to view the earth!

Inspired by a ‘spaceship of the future’, the hotel will also have futuristic 3D holograms, digital wall art, digitally interactive tables and robots. The company behind the idea, Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC), say the hotel build will commence in 2025, with plans to open its doors (air lock hatches) in 2027.

“The station will be designed from the start to accommodate both national space agencies conducting low gravity research and space tourists who want to experience life on a large space station with the comfort of low gravity and the feel of a nice hotel,” OAC says.

The hotel will spin as it travels around the earth, creating artificial gravity of about a sixth of that found on earth, similar to that of the moon. It will cruise around the whole world every 90 minutes, at a height of 1,200 miles up.

Sign me up I hear you cry! Well at this stage it is unclear how much a trip to the Voyager Station hotel will set you back, trips to space don’t come cheap. “Historically, a trip to space cost up to US$25m and that resulted in staying in a Zero-G facility, using vacuums for toilets, sleeping in a bag strapped to a wall, and living in a laboratory,” the website says, explaining that artificial gravity means guests can enjoy normal “toilet facilities, showers, and beds “.

Well, you have six years to save for a ticket…
