Maine’s famous spinning ice disc has returned!

Big frozen ice disk in Westbrook Maine River

The famous spinning ice disc has returned to the Presumpscot River below Saccarappa Falls, Westbrook, Maine. The disc first appeared in 2019 when it took the internet by storm (measuring at over 91 metres wide).

These ice discs are formed as a result of the current and vortex under the ice, forcing the sheets to spin and form into circles. But these discs are rarely seen in locations such as Westbrook.

City officials have advised residents “it is not safe” to skate or walk on. They are encouraging people to visit and share photos of the disc before it disappears.
