Hair peace

When US President Donald Trump met North Korean head of state Kim Jong Un in Hanoi, on 27th and 28th February to discuss de-nuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, there were some hair-raising moments. Literally.

A barber shop in the Vietnamese capital had been offering customers free Donald Trump or Kim Jong Un haircuts ahead of the summit. With around a dozen customers taking up the offer of a Trump or Kim trim, it gave hairdresser Le Tuan Duong’s Beauty Academy a shot at promoting world peace.

The free haircuts are intended by Duong to show that Hanoi is a city of harmony. “When Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un decide to come here to talk about restoring peace, I think I should do something to show that Hanoi people welcome the summit,” he commented.

Each style makes a very different statement, he explained. Whilst the Kim represents youth, the Trump displays power. The Korean leader’s angular crop has so far proven more popular.

One young punter, To Gia Huy, decided that since many people told him he looks like Kim Jong Un, he may as well have his locks shaped in the style of the so-called “little rocket man”. The nine-year-old was hoping for a chance to meet his lookalike when the two leaders met for their second summit.

Meanwhile, motorcycle taxi driver Le Phuc Hai, 66, was all in favour of a Trump, dying his hair yellow and going for the US leader’s complex combover. “I really like Donald Trump so I want to have his hairstyle,” he stated.

With the inconclusive summit over, President Trump stepped aboard Hairforce One, no doubt satisfied that his efforts have at least not reversed the receding threat of military action between the two protagonists.
