A cargo ship crashed into a man’s front garden in Norway, missing his home by just a few metres, whilst he slept.

Johan Helberg was sound asleep when a 135m (440 foot) long container ship ran aground in the Trondheimsfjord off Byneset in Trondheim.

Various pictures show how close the gigantic ship came to crashing through Mr Helberg’s home. However, he didn’t wake up during the incident and was later woken by his neighbour who rushed round to check he was okay.

“The doorbell rang at a time when I don’t really like opening the door,” Mr Helberg said. “I like to go back to sleep. But it was a very insistent ring, so I finally went to answer it. And there’s a guy I know very well standing there, looking at me in amazement and saying: ‘Have you not seen the ship?’

“But I hadn’t. So I went to the window and saw this [the ship].”

Several hours later, the massive red and green container ship was still stuck near the wooden house, waiting to be refloated.

The ship reportedly caused damage to a heating pipe in Helberg’s cabin, but the homeowner told the station it could have been much worse.

“If the ship had hit the rocky cliff right next to it, it would have lifted up and hit the house hard.”

None of the 16 crew members were injured in the incident, the cause of which is still being investigated by Norwegian police.

Bente Hetland, the CEO of the shipping company that owns the NCL Salten, told TV2 the same ship ran aground twice before – once in 2023 in Hadsel and once in 2024, in Ålesund.
