Danish brewery creates ‘Pisner’, a beer for the more adventurous drinker.

Last week in Most Curious we told you how beer is a more effective pain relief than traditional painkillers.

This week, however, we may retract that story in light of news that a new brew has been developed by Danish brewery Norrebro Bryghus that includes human urine in its recipe.

The beer, of course, doesn’t contain human waste directly, but instead is produced from fields of malting barley that have been fertilised with human urine recycled from a music festival rather than traditional animal manure or factory-made plant nutrients.

“When the news that we had started brewing the Pisner came out, a lot of people thought we were filtering the urine to put it directly in the beer and we had a good laugh about that,” said Henrik Vang, Chief Executive of Norrebro Bryghus.

The brewing technique, which has been coined ‘Brewcycling’ is aimed towards those conscious about sustainability.

Beer drinker Anders Sjögren who has tried Pisner said: “If it had tasted even a bit like urine, I would put it down, but you don’t even notice.”
