A paw-some new team member

Published: Nov 2019

Arguably the best addition to a team in quite some time, the state attorney’s office in Chicago has sworn in a furry new member of staff – Hatty the Labrador.

Happy labrador dog peeping over a fence

At two-years-old, Hatty is not only the first emotional support dog for the department, but also the youngest employee in general. Having been trained partly by inmates, her job is to ease the strain of criminal proceedings on those with mental health issues, and young children who have been victims of assault.

To be formally sworn in by Cook County’s state attorney, Kim Foxx, Hatty looked solemn as she stood on her hind legs at the table and placed her paw on a law book as an oath was administered.

She’ll be busy in her new job too, working human nine-to-five hours and handling up to 200 cases per year. When off the clock though, Hatty will be cared for by two office employees who have received specialised training to handle the responsibilities both at work and home.

I think almost everyone would love to have a Hatty of their own on their teams. See photo of Hatty.
