Plans are afoot to bring a 4G cellular network to the Moon.

In 2019, the Moon will have a 4G cellular network. That is if plans by Vodafone, Nokia and space exploration company PTScientists to put masts on the Moon come to fruition.

The masts will be sent to the Moon on a SpaceX rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, USA, in what will be the world’s first ever privately-funded Moon landing.

Whilst it may be regarded as a publicity stunt, there is good cause for giving the Moon a high-speed cellular network as it will enable Audi lunar exploration vehicles to communicate with each other and with a base station. These vehicles are being used to test if the Moon could be a potential human habitat.

It will also allow for high-definition video streaming of the Moon’s surface back to earth.

“This project involves a radically innovative approach to the development of mobile network infrastructure,” said Dr Hannes Ametsreiter, CEO of Vodafone Germany.
