BYD’s rapid growth brought several challenges. Difficulty in navigating diverse and evolving regulations across different countries, including complex cross-border transaction regulations, intricate tax requirements, transfer pricing rules and data protection requirements.
Elevated administrative costs in daily treasury management arise from managing numerous local accounts in different regions, making visibility and control harder to achieve. Liquidity is unevenly distributed across regions, with certain markets, such as the Netherlands, experiencing surplus funds, while others, like Hungary, have significant funding needs, leading to inefficiencies and higher financial cost. The management of ten plus currencies is becoming increasingly difficult to perform efficiently, hindering the support of timely payments.
Disparate systems and interfaces generate increasing IT costs for integration. There was a need for a core banking group to accompany BYD’s growth. Due to its rapid global expansion, BYD aimed to select a group of core partner banks that offer the strongest product capabilities, most efficient client servicing models and best pricing. The goal was to appoint a ‘champion’ bank in each region, with a secondary bank serving as a backup. This support encompasses several key aspects:

The solution
BYD selected BNP Paribas’ holistic cash management solution comprising:
Account structure – optimised account structure including the use of both local accounts and NRAs, balancing the ease of local operation, as well as the centralised management in currency centres.
Payment and collections – direct local clearing membership to support different types of payments and collections including electronic tax services.
Virtual accounts – to support ‘on-behalf’ scheme, for incoming and outgoing flows; domestic, SEPA and cross‑border.
FX-automation – FX solution for cross-currency payments that provides account optimisation to create cost savings and efficiencies.
Liquidity – automated physical cash pooling of EU accounts to Hong Kong via a multi-layer structure, centralising funds in a single location to optimise cash flow.
Flexible self-management – the bank offers a self‑management tool, enabling dynamic adjustments to sweeping profiles, interest conditions, alert settings and more.
Connectivity – the smart connectivity solution by the bank is designed to be flexible to meet BYD’s online and host‑to‑host bank connectivity needs.
The solution covers 15+ countries, with Hong Kong as global cash pool header and most countries where BYD operates in Europe. The cross-region cash pool in Hong Kong was established in Q225, and there are several projects are currently ongoing.
