The challenge

Prior to their recent treasury transformation, American Honda’s corporate headquarters controlled all strategic cash activities – including cash investments, all inter‑company funding flows to subsidiaries and all other corporate cash activities.

The manufacturing subsidiary, meanwhile, performed its own day-to-day cash management, relying on manual workflows and spreadsheets for its internal operating cash. Operations were spread across eight entities – supported by 32 operating accounts and eight payroll accounts – and tracked through an independent set of spreadsheets for each entity.

For Corporate HQ, short-term investment activities had been centralised within the Tradeweb ICD Portal investment solution, but the treasury team still required tighter integration between the portal and their TMS to fully support straight through processing. Cash and fixed income portfolio reporting was based primarily on month-end data, which constrained the granularity and timeliness of insights.

As a result, when leadership requested exposure analyses – such as counterparty concentration risk – the treasury team had to manually assemble and evaluate the information from monthly reports.

The solution

Between 2022-2025, American Honda executed a four-part transformation strategy, along with their implementation and advisory partner, Clearsulting, that consisted of the following steps:

  1. Entity consolidation and bank account rationalisation: to begin, American Honda consolidated eight separate operational entities into one manufacturing subsidiary and consolidated all cash management responsibilities to Corporate HQ. This shift enabled treasury to retire 40 legacy bank accounts and streamline operations under a unified cash management model.

  2. TMS expansion and full cash visibility: next, American Honda significantly expanded their usage of Kyriba across the newly restructured manufacturing subsidiary to support daily cash positioning, automated journal entries, payment workflows, intercompany netting and audit-ready reporting.

  3. Cash forecasting and investment integration/automation: after these stages, Honda leveraged pre‑built API integrations between Kyriba and ICD Portal to synchronise core investment and cash workflows.

  4. Comprehensive portfolio analytics and AI-enabled reporting: to complement their broader cash management transformation, American Honda deployed an AI-enabled portfolio analytics solution that resides within their investment portal and enables their team to monitor risk, compliance and performance across their entire fixed-income portfolio.

Best practice and innovation

The transformation unifies what was a heavily disparate and disjointed process across numerous subsidiaries and entities into one single, integrated liquidity framework. By consolidating eight entities into a single manufacturing subsidiary, retiring 40 bank accounts, and eliminating numerous local spreadsheets, American Honda reduced structural complexity and mitigated operational risk.

Enhancements to the TMS and investment portal now support cash operations across both Corporate HQ and the manufacturing subsidiary, enabling consistent processes, 100% daily cash visibility, and end-to-end automation across all operating accounts and related activities.

Through automation, the team eliminated roughly 50 hours of manual effort each week, enabling treasury professionals to redirect their time from transactional processing to strategic analysis and the rapid onboarding of new projects and initiatives.

Through bidirectional API connectivity between their TMS and investment portal, excess cash identified in forecasts can be dynamically invested within approved parameters without any manual intervention. And with the addition of AI-enabled portfolio analysis, investment oversight has shifted from monthly review cycles to continuous monitoring that occurs in real-time, with just a few button clicks. This architecture transforms cash management from a static reporting function into a dynamic liquidity engine – balancing visibility, control and yield within a centralised and scalable ecosystem.
