Octopus Energy Group is a British renewable energy group. It was founded in 2015 with the backing of Octopus Group, a British asset management company. Headquartered in London, the company has operations in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the United States.

Angela Hobart started her career working in the technology sector at Dell. But after a few years, she realised that she wanted her career to focus on addressing one of the many major challenges facing the world in the 21st century.

“I thought my career would be best spent working on one of those issues and seeing how hard I personally could push the needle to address that problem,” says Angela. “Climate change felt like the most interesting and urgent of the problems I was looking at. And I saw that the emerging clean tech sector was radically disrupting oil and gas and power and utilities – industries that have looked virtually the same for the last 50 years.”

Recognising that Europe was at the forefront of energy and climate policy, in 2019 Angela moved to the UK and began working for Octopus Energy – a company that is actively using technology to drive the energy transition – only three years after the company had launched.

A challenging role at Octopus Energy

In her current role, Angela’s responsibilities include debt and equity fundraising, capital allocation, FP&A, business partnering, treasury and investor relations. Her numerous achievements in this role include:

  • Undertaking five investment rounds and raising almost £2bn in primary equity.

  • Executing secondary transactions for current investors.

  • Leading the company’s first syndicated financing on a £1.1bn secured facility with BNP Paribas.

  • Leading the company through its first private credit ratings process, resulting in a top-of-expectations initial credit rating.

Adding to the challenge, Angela has done much of this while navigating the energy crisis that began in 2021. Unlike many of its competitors, Octopus Energy not only survived the crisis, but was able to grow its customer base from two million in 2021 to now almost ten million globally in 2025.

During this period, Angela was directly responsible for liquidity management, and partnered with energy procurement to ensure adequate hedging was in place.

“It was an incredibly challenging time,” says Angela. “We had to put aside yesterday’s conventional thinking and make decisions quickly. It was important to know when you need to move quickly and avoid ‘analysis paralysis’ and when you need to be 100% accurate.”

A rapid rise through the organisation

Angela’s rise through the world of finance and treasury has been nothing short of meteoric. After beginning her career in finance in 2012, she was appointed Director of Strategic Finance at Octopus Energy just seven years later. Since then, she has helped the company navigate an unprecedented period of turbulence in the UK energy market, during which over 30 energy suppliers failed – all while remaining passionate about championing diversity, making a difference in the world and challenging herself to move the needle on climate change.

“Everyone I know within the bank who has worked with Angela agrees that we have never known someone who’s able to digest so much complex information and deal with things in such an organised way,” comments Astrid Perrin-Megret, Director, Global Trade Solutions at BNP Paribas.

Where leadership is concerned, Angela has embraced the culture of high autonomy and high responsibility that characterises Octopus. She is also passionate about celebrating the achievements of her team.

As well as seeking to manage others with empathy, Angela is deeply committed to furthering diversity and equality within her team. “The approach I’ve taken is to make sure the pipeline at the beginning of the hiring process is as diverse as it can be,” she explains. “I’m very proud of the diversity in my team. Our company takes diversity seriously and is performing well at the management and staff level, but board level diversity continues to show a gap both in our company and in the broader energy industry, so it’s important to keep moving forward.”

What comes next?

Looking ahead, Angela says she sees her career continuing in the climate sector. “If anything, the events of the last five years have shown us that the problem is getting worse, not better. Keeping your foot on the gas – or rather, on the pedal of your electric vehicle! – is more urgent than ever,” comments Angela.

Having spent her whole career to date in finance, Angela feels very much at home in finance roles. At some point, however, she believes that running a business unit could give her a broader exposure to operations that could one day help her become a well-rounded CFO. But in terms of planning for the future, she tries to think about impact in her career, rather than position. “My overriding goal isn’t to be CFO or CEO – when I retire, however many years in the future that might be, I want to be able to look back and say that I threw everything I had at the effort to combat climate change for future generations.”

“Angela’s combination of skill, dedication, compassion and leadership makes her a wonderful colleague and friend and, in my opinion, a truly deserving candidate for this award. Her impact on Octopus and the energy sector at large has been enormous, and I have no doubt she will continue to deliver great things in the years to come,” says Hamish Lazell, Strategy Director, Octopus Energy Group.
