Radiohjälpen is a Swedish humanitarian organisation and foundation that is organised by Sveriges Radio AB, Sveriges Television AB and Sveriges Utbildningsradio AB.

The challenge

The Swedish charity foundation Radiohjälpen, organises annual live events where people are encouraged to donate money via Swish, Sweden’s real-time mobile payments platform. However, the charity struggled to efficiently keep track of and display the collected sum. Adding small donations together was a manual task complete with paperwork, administrative headaches and reporting delays.

The solution

Determined to make the process more efficient, the Radiohjälpen’s treasury unit reached out to Nordea. The bank offered a solution with new API technology via the bank’s Premium API Instant Reporting. This makes it possible to monitor the charitable collections in real time. During live broadcast events like Children of the World (Världens Barn) and Music Aid (Musikhjälpen) Radiohjälpen can now reveal the tally live to the audience.

Kristina Henschen, Secretary General, Radiohjälpen, describes how this open banking solution has facilitated their work. “This is extremely valuable as we are only eight people working at Radiohjälpen. This tool has improved our ability to save lives in the world.”

For example, during the live TV broadcasted charity event “Världens Barn” (Children of the World) in October 2023, Radiohjälpen amassed SEK70m in a matter of hours. Via Nordea’s Instant Reporting API the amount raised was displayed live on screen above the stage enhancing audience participation and inspiring even more donations.

During the week-long radio and TV broadcast “Musikhjälpen” (Music Aid) in December 2023, which aim was to combat world hunger, the young public donated almost SEK60m. The API Instant Reporting was used backstage 24/7 to efficiently monitor the success. Furthermore, it speedily allowed sharing of the individuals engagement. It made it possible for donors to keep track of their achievements in a separate digital fund-raising tool.

Best practice and innovation

Manual account information gathering has multiple pain points. With Instant Reporting API integration, customers like Radiohjälpen can access real-time account information across the breadth of their bank accounts. Customers can obtain and update all their account balances as frequently as required, instantly. They can monitor their accounts in real-time for cash movements and limits, get a list of account transactions, observe and reconcile recent transactions as they happen or filter lengthier histories by date range.

It has enabled Radiohjälpen to keep track of and report millions of SEK at their annual live broadcasted charity events. The use of “Swish flash mobs” also increases donations. At one recent Radiohjälpen charity event (Music Aid) a Swish flash mob was held which broke all-time records. During just a few minutes, viewers and listeners sent money via Swish resulting in a total of SEK1,145,379.
