Honeywell, Highly Commended, Outstanding Insourcing/Outsourcing

Published: Aug 2011

Honeywell’s decision to upgrade to the latest version of SunGard’s Quantum provided many improvements and new features. To complement the Quantum software upgrade, Honeywell elected to implement the new software utilising SunGard AvantGard Hosted and Managed Treasury Services.

Honeywell International is a Fortune 100 diversified technology and manufacturing leader serving customers worldwide with aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings, homes and industry; automotive products; turbochargers; and specialty materials.

Joseph Nametko explains:

“The hosted solution provided a cohesive team of IT professionals that eliminated many of the operational issues treasury encountered in the Honeywell hosted model”.

Honeywell’s data centre business partner maintained a four-hour service level agreement (SLA) on mission critical (SEV-1) hardware and software problems. The Honeywell infrastructure consisted of a mix of Microsoft Windows servers, Citrix servers and a large Oracle shared server. When a SEV-1 issue arose, it was a challenge to gather the right mix of software/hardware/networking/database professionals to access and correct the problem.

The hosted model is vastly improved with a SEV-1 response time of only 30 minutes. It now requires only one phone call to reach a team of experienced IT professionals who also have extensive Quantum application knowledge. Another benefit of the hosting solution is independently audited and certified SAS 70 environments for production and disaster recovery (DR).

This solution provided a very secure, stable hardware environment and has an added benefit of Quantum’s software engineers and developers to provide an optimal installation and configuration on the SunGard servers. Business continuity and disaster recovery (DR) is very important to every company. The Honeywell DR plan provided a recovery time objective (RTO) of 12 hours; SunGard’s RTO is less than four hours.

As Joseph Nametko points out:

“In the event of a disaster, this might be the biggest benefit of outsourcing to SunGard Hosting and Managed IT Services”.

Honeywell Treasury is pioneering with its decision to host its mission critical Treasury Workstation Application and its business sensitive database at SunGard, taking advantage of the latest cloud technology. In doing so, Honeywell moved to a secure, stable environment and achieved up to 800% improvement in response time on system outages. Business continuity and disaster recovery improved by 200%.

Honeywell expects to reach Six Sigma on system up-time, while freeing up valuable in-house IT resources for more strategic initiatives.

Honeywell wanted to take advantage of the new features of Quantum and improve the up-time metric to Six Sigma. Disaster recovery (DR) was also a very large issue. In the Honeywell hosted model, the key IT professionals at Honeywell and SunGard had to be engaged to execute the DR plan. This was the primary reason Quantum had a recovery time objective of almost 12 hours, which was unacceptable to Treasury.

Joseph Nametko concludes “Honeywell Treasury and IT have positioned their best-in-class global operations and applications to take advantage of cloud computing”.
