A new art installation has been set up linking New York and Dublin by video screen.
Known as ‘The Portal’, the livestreaming public art installation allows people in New York and Dublin to peer into life on opposite sides of the Atlantic in real time.
The New York portal can be found in front of the Flatiron Building on Fifth Avenue, whilst the Dublin portal is located on O’Connell Street in front of the General Post Office and the Spire.
The Portal was activated on 8th May, with crowds from both countries gathering around with signs reading ‘Hello from New York’ and ‘Welcome to Dublin’.
“Portals are an invitation to meet people above borders and differences and to experience our world as it really is – united and one,” said Benediktas Gylys, the Lithuanian artist who conceived the installation.
Since its installation, it has been a source of whimsical delight for sidewalk crowds in the two cities more than 3,000 miles apart.
The displays will operate throughout the autumn, but an official end date has not yet been announced.
