Police in the United Kingdom have recovered a Ferrari which was stolen in Italy from the Austrian Formula One driver Gerhard Berger nearly 30 years ago.

The drivers were in Imola for the San Marino Grand Prix in April 1995 when the red Ferrari F512M was one of two cars stolen and they have been missing ever since.

More recently London’s Metropolitan Police force received a tip off from the manufacturer that a Ferrari was being sold by a UK dealer to a US buyer and it was flagged as a stolen vehicle.

The police force’s Organised Vehicle Crime Unit discovered the car had been brought into Britain from Japan in 2023. The car is valued at £350,000 (US$444,000) and was subsequently seized by officers.

Constable Mike Pilbeam, who led the investigation said: “Our inquiries were painstaking and included contacting authorities from around the world. We worked quickly with partners including the National Crime Agency, as well as Ferrari and international car dealerships, and this collaboration was instrumental in understanding the vehicle’s background and stopping it from leaving the country.”

The second stolen Ferrari is still missing, and no one has yet been arrested for the crime.

Between 1994 and 1996 Ferrari manufactured 501 of the F512M model, which has a top speed of 315km per hour (196 mph).
