A time capsule dating back to 1905 has been discovered during the demolition of a fire station in Ohio.
The Marion Fire Department in Ohio, US said firefighters stumbled upon a copper box whilst removing the cornerstone from the old station.
On opening the time capsule, the department found a treasure trove of items including turn-of-the-century badges worn by Marion firefighters. The capsule also contained a roster for the fire company – which listed names of those serving at the time – a Marion Daily News newspaper, offering a snapshot of events and stories from the same year, and a book from the Marion Steam Shovel Company.
On a social media post, the department stated how appreciative they were to find such valuable historical artefacts, which would be entrusted to the Marion County Historical Society, whilst the new station is being constructed.
Finding this time capsule provides a fascinating link to the past and a glimpse into Marion’s firefighting history for future generations. Once the new station is completed, the artefacts will be housed there in a bespoke display case for all to see!
