Rescuers in Switzerland are hailing a furry Chihuahua as a “four-legged hero” whose pacing on top of an Alpine rock helped a helicopter crew find its owner, who had fallen into a crevasse on a nearby glacier.
The man, who has not been named, was exploring the Fee Glacier in southern Switzerland when he broke through a snow bridge and fell nearly eight meters (approximately 26 feet), according to the rescue, training and transport company, Air Zermatt.
Equipped with a walkie-talkie, the man connected with a person nearby who alerted emergency services to the accident. However, his exact location was not known and after searching for half an hour, the rescue team finally caught sight of the pacing pooch.
As the crew zeroed in on the Chihuahua, the hole the man fell into became visible. They were able to rescue the man, and he and his trusty canine companion were flown to a nearby hospital.
“Imagine if the dog wasn’t there,” Bruno Kalbermatten, Air Zermatt spokesperson said. “I have no idea what would happen to this guy. I think he wouldn’t survive this fall into the crevasse.”
On its website, the company said: “The dog is a four-legged hero who may have saved his master’s life in a life-threatening situation.”
