Oliver Widger, a 29-year-old from Oregon, recently embarked on a life-altering solo sailing voyage to Hawaii with his cat, Phoenix. Leaving behind a stable job, Widger was motivated by a diagnosis of a spinal condition that threatened his mobility. Determined to live life on his terms, he sold his belongings, purchased a US$50,000 sailboat and taught himself to sail through online resources.

Widger and Phoenix departed in late April and arrived in Hawaii one month later. During which time the pair encountered many challenges, the scariest moment being when a rudder failed. Highlights included seeing dolphins and whales and periods of calm Pacific waters.

The pair’s journey captivated audiences worldwide. Documenting their experiences on TikTok and Instagram under the handle “Sailing with Phoenix,” they amassed over 2.7 million followers.

Upon reaching Honolulu’s Waikiki Yacht Club, Widger was greeted by fans and Hawaii Governor Josh Green. Widger now plans to stay in Hawaii to make necessary boat repairs, before considering future travels to French Polynesia.
