Alfred Kiong is a seasoned treasury professional with over a decade of experience, praised by his peers for his innovative financial strategies, leadership and adaptability. Since joining STCE in 2016, Alfred has made standout contributions to the company and Sprng Energy – such as securing optimal funding solutions, critical trade facility and streamlining operations in complex regulatory environments – that has positioned him as a true rising star in corporate treasury.
Career foundations
Alfred began his career, after graduating from Nanyang Technological University with a degree in Banking and Finance. He quickly obtained his CFA charter and FRM certification, which gave him strong foundations for a career in treasury. His first role as a treasury analyst at Dow Chemical provided him with valuable insights into the operational aspects of treasury. Alfred then joined Nestlé Treasury as a Cash Management Analyst, where he demonstrated his potential early on by driving several projects. During his work stint with Nestlé, Alfred’s promotion to FX Advisor, coupled with an international assignment at Nestlé Treasury in Luxembourg, broadened his experience in international cash management and foreign exchange risk management.
Transforming Sprng’s treasury operations
In 2016, Alfred initially joined Shell Treasury as a Market Dealer, before becoming a Treasury Manager with key responsibility for Shell’s treasury operations in India in addition to other Asia Pacific countries. His time at Shell has been marked by significant accomplishments, many of which have been recognised both internally and externally. Alfred is the Asia focal in Shell’s global treasury project, notably contributing to the team that won the prestigious Adam Smith Award for Best Foreign Exchange Solution in 2019 and also part of being Asia’s Top Treasury Team in 2021.
One of Alfred’s standout achievements has been his leadership in transforming Sprng Energy’s financial structure after Shell’s acquisition of the company. He led efforts to access group funding through innovative solutions like Optionally Convertible Debentures (OCDs), a first for Shell in India. This initiative allowed Sprng to access Group funding and manage onshore cash challenges by being able to repatriate surplus operational cash via coupon payments, while retaining the flexibility to redeem capital anytime.
Alfred’s ability to navigate complex regulatory frameworks, particularly in India, was critical in unlocking these new funding routes. He consulted with global and local teams, including finance, legal and tax experts, as well as the company’s global relationship banks, to ensure regulatory compliance, alignment to internal organisational requirements while pursuing financial goals. His success in unlocking new types of funding for Sprng Energy via OCDs and onshore inter-company loans, are clear demonstrations of his ability to balance financial risk management with business growth objectives.
In addition to funding, Alfred has been key in implementing a critical trade facility needed for Sprng and optimising liquidity management. He implemented a renewables-centric cash pool solution to optimise intercompany liquidity. This approach earned him and his team the Triple A Asset Best Liquidity Solution award in 2024. His drive for digitalisation has also led to streamlining payment processes, reducing manual effort and improving overall efficiency.
Beyond his technical expertise, Alfred’s leadership is defined by his exceptional stakeholder management skills. Despite being based in Singapore, he quickly built strong relationships with his local team and bankers, establishing a reputation for understanding local market nuances. His ability to lead cross-functional teams across various geographies has been critical to his success in managing complex treasury operations for Shell India and Sprng Energy.
Innovation and continuous improvement
Alfred’s career has been characterised by a relentless pursuit of innovation and efficiency. From introducing new liquidity management models to driving banking automation for Sprng’s treasury operations, Alfred has consistently delivered value beyond his direct responsibilities. His resourcefulness and willingness to tackle challenges head-on have set him apart as a leader who not only meets but exceeds expectations.
