The speed of Japan’s post-war economic recovery was remarkable, but it culminated in a hugely overheated economy in the late 1980s. When the bubble burst the country found itself in an economic wilderness, the so-called ‘lost decade’. In this article we look at the events which preceded the bursting of the bubble and the raft of economic problems which the Japanese government was confronted with during the decade that followed.
